i occasionally remind my drummer that we are making dance music for white people and to therefore play the quarter notes...

I can also dance to portishead. in fact, it's some of the most dance-friendly music out there, barring funk and hip-hop.

funny, I've seen rksm1 dance to a lot of things, and not dance to a number of others. but I don't recall seeing Drok out at anyplace playing dance music in the last five years at all. Maybe you should, Drok.

I assumed the disclaimer that "danceable" is a subjective term was implied. What people "do" to R&B / hiphop / funk generally involves holding a beer in the air while rubbing their crotch against someone's ass, alternately bending and straightening their knees, and usually ignoring the actual rhythm of the song.

I don't consider that dancing, and therefore that music isn't "danceable". It's all good, I don't expect the people who do THAT^ to consider my unique blend of marching, kung fu, and Irish folk stepping[*] to be dancing either.

[*] Note: Not Irish. Don't know kung-fu. A more apt description might be "artless stomping and flailing".

Sadly, you won't be able to see it in action tonight, since I've been spewing liquid from both ends all afternoon and don't really feel up to it. (not to mention, I'm unsure whether it's food poisoning or a flu (contagious?) yet!) 8-(

Yeah, I got that. Hence the crack about Minnesotans being the whitest of the white.

way to make me ruin a joke, rob... :D

I will be spinning a guest set this week at Chamber. I plan on spinning a set very similar to the one I did at the Caustic show last Friday

I am looking forward to the night it should be a lot of fun.

Crap! I totally spaced that tonight was 80's night. =( I felt like such a putz wearing boring black stuff while a couple dozen skinny ties were left hanging in my closet collecting dust.

All the regular GZ catwalk dancers were totally decked out 80's-style, though; niiiice!

||EDIT: actually, I should say "like, totally rad!" =D

Yes. What made you confused?

Chamber is EVERY Thursday.
The sole exception will be during CONvergence, which starts 7/2[Thu]. (or so I was told, in the presence of three Chamber organizers)

P.S. if you're on a budget, there's no cover from 9-10pm. It's pretty lonely that early, but I'll be there. And I prolly still owe you a northern-hospitality "welcome back to MN" drink...

I don't know what happened but when I got to 501 S. Washington, all I saw was some latin hip hop band with a horn section
I was in the parking lot calling whomever I could to try to figure it out
No one could help so I went home
Is there some secret door or something that I didn't know about?
I was walking around the block and the only "alt" place I saw was the Eagle

Rob... I don't know how/why you do this every week. Maybe it gets better after 1230.

Though to be fair, I did hear my favorite Haujobb song.

Almost missed it myself. The only sign on the door mentions acupuncture or something, the only revealing notice being the "501". I was half expecting this door to be locked.

Was it a Yoga studio? That's the place. Doesn't look like the door to a nightclub at all. But if you go in and follow the long hallway, there's a person checking ID's, and then you do a counterclockwise 180 and that's the stairs to Bolt Underground.

They always put up a "Chamber" sandwich-board on the sidewalk outside so you know you're in the right place.

You can also get there from INSIDE either the Eagle or Bolt (just keep heading northwestward).
||EDIT: oops, f**ked up my directions there.

I've suggested in the past that they pipe the music up to the sidewalk to attract passersby (and to let the smokers hear what they're missing), but it hasn't happened yet. (Would probably require a wireless amplified speaker & transmitter setup, ugh)

Nope. Every night is wildly inconsistent, since they apparently have a random/rotating DJ schedule. Last night you missed some really good hard stuff around 9:30... but there's an 80+% chance you'll hate whatever's playing NEXT Thursday around 9:30.

I've said it before. I'll say it again. It's REALLY frustrating that I have to spend 12 hours a week in dance clubs, just to hear 2-3 hours of industrial.

But, EVERY industrial night in Twin Cities history has repeated the SAME formula: water it down with other "sorta-darksideryish" stuff, until all the industrial fans (except Rob) stop attending, and then financially FAIL (because Rob doesn't even buy booze).

Gee, maybe it'll work NEXT TIME, though.

Well this confirms my longstanding theory. Congratulations, Rob -- you are the TC Industrial Scene. You're the last man left standing. So I guess a good rule of thumb for club nights would be, if Rob's not on the dancefloor -- YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!

Given proper notice and reason, I can round up a sizeable contingent of alcoholics that will all go on the dancefloor -- provided that the music is good. But that simply hasn't happened in years.

Though I'm not necessarily looking for hard stuff (most things I listen could technically be classed as synthpop). I'm just a bit sick of 80s (and sound-like-80s) hits, futurepop, and I'm also not that big on TBM. But all in all, I just would like at least 40 minutes of music that I actually would enjoy dancing to.

I think everyone can agree that "good" is a pretty damn vague description of music...

To be fair, pretty much ALL the DJ's in "the scene" will bend over backwards to play requests. But they can't read your friggin' mind, so take advantage of the request sheet! Hell, many of them will play stuff you bring them (or they'll go out and FIND it for future use), if your tastes are so obscure that nobody has it.

Oh yeah, before I forget:

6/25[Thu] Gothic Beach Party

Dust off those trunks and flippers!
(there's a cool flyer for this already but I only have hardcopy)
||EDIT AGAIN: flyer in THIS THREAD

|EDIT: And just to make sure it's not me scaring everyone else away -- rest assured that I will find something that's theme-appropriate but doesn't, umm, show-off my "tan".

So Chamber isn't playing primarily hard Industrial anymore? Why?! See, this is the problem. You set out to actually be something, appealing to a segment of the population, then you water it down and alienate that core group. But you occasionally try to appeal to the core group which alienates the watered-down personalities that don't want to hear hard Industrial. Hence, you FAIL.

I just don't understand why there is only about three people who see the logic in all this.

I don't think Chamber was ever advertised as a Hard Industrial night. As far as I remember, the main selling point was that it was not Ground Zero. Looking over the playlists (which are infrequently posted), I can't really determine any particular pattern. However, there's almost nothing played from the years 2007-09.

However on that note, I have never had a DJ play my request in this city (aside from Corrosion, where I brought cds). I don't really know anyone that has ever gotten their request played off of the request sheet.

I think I quit on requests at Hard Mondays in the Fall of 2005. I requested some Amduscia -- "Impulso Biomecnico" was the over played club hit of everywhere-else-but-here that fall -- they didn not have it.

Liighter is right, Chamber was never billed as a hard industrial night.

They have four DJ's there, each with fairly different tastes. They are all very consistent in what they do, but they don't follow a regular order (or at least I don't know what the order is)

If you ever brought CD's to HM we would have played them. We always play requests, actually (like Rob said) every DJ I know goes out of their way to play requests.

We don't have everything, but if it's something we have we will play it.

I actually played amdusica-Placeres Negros, one of my first sets here in the cities, it killed the floor, all except for Rob, and he actually asked me what it was....
