Sorry, just wanted to make sure people hate me for being an insensitive jerk and a grammar nazi, rather than (mistakenly) thinking I was just a run-of-the-mill homophobe or something.

This thread needed a shot in the arm anyway; it hadn't even accumulated a full page of replies during the past three years!! Hell, this thread was deader than the actual night, and that's SAYIN' somethin'!

On the upside, Heliosphere was awesome; they just keep getting better every time I hear 'em. And the DJ-spun stuff only made me want to stab my eardrums out a couple times, which is way better than most Mondays.

Eh... Didn't you tell me you don't usually go to Mondays? So how would you know what happens most Mondays?

Hey, you started the nitpicking... :P

Eh... I thought it being soft made people more regular...

In any case, if you want to be more regular, there's this herbal tea I know....

I can tell you this about rskm1; no one is more regular. The guy special-orders high fiber cereals not available on supermarket shelves. This is one area where rskm1 is waaay ahead of the curve.

I have a question. Is Hard Mondays a failed leather boy night that darksiders took over?

I've always wondered that.

Thanks, Rob! Coming from you that means a lot!

And we were really happy with the crowd, as there were a TON of people dancing -- as opposed to the normal stand-around-and-watch Minneapolis crowds.

We hope that The Saloon and Hard Mondays will have us back again, as it's always a great time.

Because of the snow it was a very slow Hard Monday, the snow also stranded [info]djo2 in Vegas so I was solo all night. That said I, and I think most people who came out, had fun. A group came in right at 11:00 and I had people on the floor from that point on.

Here is the playlist. Early in the night there was literally nobody there so I entertained myself with some break beat then playing around mixing stuff together.

Because of the light crowd everyone who requested a song got to hear whatever they requested, that’s always interesting and fun.

Is Hard Mondays still going on Mon nights? I've been working two jobs and haven't been out in ages. I'd like to swing by the Saloon if the Venue is right.

I'm not really trying to start a retorical discussion about whether or not HM is as great as it once was or is better now that ____ DJs. I'm just really just wondering if HM is still going on every Monday. I just don't want to show up there all eye-linered out just to find out its underware night and a DJ playing Diana Ross.

P.S. 2nd Monday of each month was recently commissioned as "Harder Monday", which includes some sort of BDSM-related activity, and so far, perceptibly more-name-appropriate music.

Nod of agreement with veinsplasher...

Though it's nice to see attempts to create some sort of contrast, between various club nights. As there's an option to go to 3 club nights a week, and they all seem to be pretty much the same thing all month long.

(starting in the usual defer to someone else tone)It'd be fun if someone try to do an IDM night...

i was totally sitting here listening to Strapping Young Lad, thinking "Gee whiz Drok, but wouldn't you enjoy this more if you were wearing vinyl chaps, a mesh tank top, and a butt plug?"

and I said to myself

"Self, no."

Numbers at HM have been going down for about a year, we need to try something to bring new people out.

numbers everywhere have been off for a little over a year.

I suggest not being in a heavy recession.

Or really good drink specials.

Most cities have ONE MONTHLY darksider club night, with two rooms.

Trying to milk FOUR WEEKLY club nights out of such a small scene doesn't sound like a recipe for success.

Personally, with so many choices, I attend the ones with good music, and skip the ones with lame-ass limp music that leaves me disappointed and bored every time I make the mistake of showing up. (But it seems I'm atypical anyway; so many people spend most of the night socializing in the smoking area, it seems like the music is probably irrelevant in the big scheme of things.)

So I for one am glad to hear about the monthly Harder Mondays. I couldn't care less about the whole whips&gags thing (doesn't everyone get their fill of that at BaGG??), but as long as the music keeps at least trying to live up to the name, I'll be there.

This is sad but true.

I'm convinced music doesn't really make any difference in this scene, we've tried every type of music with every DJ we can find and it never seems to matter.

Telling bar owners that doesn't really work (I know I've tried)

So we have to do what we have to do.

(I like the drink specials recommendation though)

I thought you were at everything rob, as I'm under the impression that you are the Twin Cities scene.

Most people that I associate with on the basis of music tastes in MN, generally are quite apathetic towards going out. So if they're not convinced they'll like more then half of what they hear, the don't leave the house.

But too many nights, with too little contrast, is probably bleeding if not shrinking the scene. So maybe we need less nights.

Another option is pruising vampire freaks, and trying to tap the kiddies. Pressure confused teenagers into going out to HM.

make it an actual harder eletro/industrial night. no techno, no played out old school goth, no mish mosh of whatever the dj decides to play because it was their fav song in the 80s. no playing music to make people dance (who are the types that will prob dance to anything anyway). if you build a good playlist, people will come back. and eventually dance. there i said it :P

As far as Friday's go, they are not a true darksider night. As others just pointed out there are too many nights in this town already so one more is not needed. It's true we do many different things, but that's because that's the only way to get people out. We do burlesque, we have Psy-trance nights, we do bands and yes sometimes darksider night (Those are with guest DJ's or open DJ nights)

"they started confusing the night, then people stopped going." People never came in the first place, that's why corrosion ended. I enjoyed Bahb's harder night, but not many other people did. Corrosion proved that this town will not come out to support an all noise/hard industrial night. On average we now get more people than Corrosion did on Fridays (and that is in no way a knock on Corrosion)

That said, Harder Mondays will be much harder and darker than an average Monday.

"if you build a good playlist, people will come back" "A good playlist"? Who decides what a good playlist is? We take requests and let people bring in their own music if they want too, I don't know how else we can try to play what people want to hear.

I don't know about that, before I got kicked out of GZ there were plenty of people at Corrosion. By the time I got let back in, it was a dead zone... and they were playing a lot of crap. (FYI: it is not a good idea to play "Soylent Green" every night).

I believe there's actually a council of (not-quite)elders, that votes up or down on the credibility of your playlist... or you can post it to the side-lines forum, and see if people make fun of you.

But as I've stated before, the request system is broken. Hearing one song that I like won't make a night better.

I'm not familiar with these, I just did a google search and found a bunch of football forums, I don't think that's what you are referring too.

HM: i've only gone a handful of times in my life. it was never quite my thing. i never dug the music and have only been compelled to dance once-to one song there. i just figured that was the format and decided it wasn't interesting to me. i'd go on harder night, i didn't know that was happening.

Corrosion: i LOVED it and went 90% of the time. towards the end it was less fun because there were less people and the music changed-the last time i went i spent almost 2 hours sitting waiting for something i wanted to dance to. i don’t expect i’ll like every song but 2 hours-with only one person dancing? the problem is everyone has different ideas of what is danceable so you'll never have a definitive answer. my vote is for noise, weird and crunchy.

i just stay home and dance now.

As far as Friday's go, they are not a true darksider night. As others just pointed out there are too many nights in this town already so one more is not needed.

"they started confusing the night, then people stopped going." People never came in the first place, that's why corrosion ended.

"if you build a good playlist, people will come back" "A good playlist"? Who decides what a good playlist is?

yeah, im not talking about the current fridays, i was talking about corrosion.

people never came in the first place? bologna! the first 10 nights there were awesome. again, people stopped going because they started playing things you could hear on a normal sat. people dont like being duped. i went almost every firday and it dwindled dwindled dwidled because the music changed. ask anyone who ever went. people didnt just get tired of going out all the time. pffft. and really 2 nights is too much in this town?? thats a crock. ok, now 3 but whatever..

you can take his first 10 playlists for corrosion and those a good playlists in my opinion. and i like everything, not just hard crap. heck even sat. has decent playlists sometimes.

Post Re: [Mon] Hard Monday @ Saloon [Free, 10pm 18+]
I've been to quite a few hard mondays. I like about half of what gets played. I don't do much dancing. I've been to a few Transmissions- I like more of the music, but the crowd is unbearably obnoxious. Definitely no dancing there. I haven't been to GZ in several years. I never cared for most of the music that got played there on any particular night. I like house and hard house, I immensely dislike EBM, with few exceptions.

My ladyfriend is from Albuquerque, which has three darksider nights a week, and they are packed. She is shocked by how poorly attended the goth nights are here. She gave up on going to them right around the time that she and I hooked up, so I pretty much gave up on them as well. We still haven't been to Chamber. We have been to Red Skies, because UG and the Spring St are friggin' awesome. The music is eclectic, good, and I probably would have danced if the lady put me up to it. I would definitely go back to that one, especially now that the weather is bee-you-tee-full.

I put on a few goth/industrial nights back home in Eau Claire. The attendance was pretty decent. I found that playing requests pretty much cleared the dance floor of everyone except the requester, unless it was something really obvious and "old school" (So What, Daisy Chain for Satan, Bela, etc.).

I times of crisis, and every club everywhere is going through a crisis right now, it is often best to return to basics. My suggestion, and I know I will be derided for it, is to return to a really obvious play list. And drink specials. The music will get people to stay, it won't get them to show up. Cheap drinks will get people to show up.

if the drinks are cheap enough *i* may think rammstein is still danceable. HA. i kid i kid. i do think drink specials are a key, i mean these nights are held at bars & if money is tight what's the point of going out. this might be corny but i think a really cool website with a bunch of candid pics [updated FREQUENTLY] and advertised to the 18yo+ crowd would help. you know, something like this: http://drunkrockers.com/ make it LOOK cool and maybe reach more people-and get people out who want to be noticed. ok i'll shut up now.

I'm trying to imagine what the distinction is between attention whoring and marketing, actually, and failing...

a very slight semantic difference. Marketing is slightly more scientific, whereas attention whoring tends to be very scattershot.

Regularly posting of playlists and posting pictures of nights are key advertising tools for keeping some club nights alive.

Though speaking for myself (and members of my crew), I go out for one specific purpose -- I want to have a drink and dance to music I like. I can dance for the whole fucking night if need be and if the music is enjoyable. If I do not hear music that I want to dance to, I see no point in going out.

My qualifying of something making a good playlist: a continuous stream of new music (this should be 60% of the playlist), no over-play, and some consistency in playlists. I do not like hearing futurepop, I do not like hearing "the hits," I also don't like a large bulk of terror banana (not a fan of combichrist or dawn of ashes, but will tolerate if need be).

Well the purpose/agenda of each are completely different, for starters. Marketing is trying to sell something, and it needs to get your attention to do that. Attention whoring is its own goal.

Speaking of marketing (but off-topic for this thread), last night's Chamber was ALL 2009 releases (until midnightish), and I couldn't help but think "WTF? Brand-new awesome crunchy music and nobody bothered to tell Liighter?!?!" I didn't know until I got there, or *I* would've. You napped through a good'n. =(

Back on topic:
The friggin' Saloon has like three goddamn rooms. See if you can take advantage of that to follow the "multi-room" club-night model ON PURPOSE.

Right now, it's all happening slipshod accidentally. <strike>Half</strike>80%of? the time people hang out in the back room or the disco side of the bar because the bartender or VJ is playing a CD/DVD that is better (AND more darksidey-appropriate!) than the sh1t blaring on the dancefloor!.
How sad is THAT???

Commandeer the sound system in the back room and play HARD SH1T back there.
ALWAYS.
No friggin "almost hard" psytrance guest DJ's.
No friggin futurepop requests.
Leave that crap in the disco room.
Give the rivet kids their own room for music and schtomping, and share drink specials with the main room. They can still hang out and smoke with their wuss-music-fan friends, or hit on the swooshsygoth chicks, without being subjected to 3+ solid hours of crap-ass homogeneous generotechno that's trying to please everybody and universally failing.

Does anybody remember when First Ave terminated Kobalt and it moved into the Sanctuary at GZ? That was AWESOME. Great turnout, and always two choices of music. (Eventually both rooms turned "samey" and it became rather pointless.)

A single venue that had 2-3 rooms with different specialties (and separate DJ pools!), had booze AND allowed 18+ers, and a decent parking situation, would completely fulfill the Twin Cities' demand for a darksider club night and render all the other nights superfluous. GZ seems like the obvious choice, but manages to keep dropping that ball. So... somebody else pick it up and run with it.

As it stands now, I have to go out FOUR nights a week to hear ONE night's worth of decent friggin' industrial music! Obviously, most people have lives and aren't that motivated. Hence the low attendance.

QUIT spreading and homogenizing!
START specializing and consolidating!

Someone mentioned Vampire Freaks. I really can't stand that site but if you're looking to get the kids to notice your night forget MySpace and head there POST HASTE. VF is the biggest thing out there for these styles of music. That's where all the kids are hanging out. Constantly. And see if you can get advertising on college radio like K (beyond the Locust Lecture). Or at least flyer the hell out of campuses. Things are in a state of flux right now because the old guard grew up, had kids, got decent regular jobs and lost patience with going out to bars/clubs all the time. There's plenty of new blood out there you just have to know where and how to court them.

And yeah, it does seem imperative to be on top of all the new shit, even if it sounds like the old shit. If people like what they hear but don't recognize it the buzz will create itself. Beyond that if it is recognized the buzz will reflect that, "OMG the DJ is spinning this great new act I just discovered and it was cool as hell bro!!!1!1!" Sneak a crusty, dusty, musty, golden, moldy oldie in there every so often but for the most part don't even bring all your old CDs. And then you can say bye bye to requests. Sorry kids, we're cutting edge now.

And to the regulars; don't make the damn kids feel uncomfortable when the do show up. You don't necessarily have to engage them but don't friggin' glare like you're prone to do. I realize that most people in this scene are socially/conversationally challenged but you can at least make them feel like they're welcome and should come back often. We need the new blood. It's also tasty.

Drink specials may have an effect. I dunno. Nothing I particularly like is ever on special since it's usually the cheap crap. But then I also don't dance and I want to see dance nights succeed, so there you go. But I will say that since I cut my teeth as a DJ it's fun as hell to actually make people dance. I dig it.
