You know the kind. Built-in speaker(s), flip up top suitcase-style would be nice, but not required.

UO sells this job: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/ca ... d=17216961 With a built-in AM/FM tuner, but the reviews say it's made like cheap junk and it costs way more than I wan to pay ($10).

Anyone have one?

The Crosley devices are pretty neat, but I'm looking for cheap. Crosley is pricey and I already have a couple nice turn tables. I just need an old record player. 70's or 80's vintage is fine. 50's or 60's would be cool too. Even a broken one I can fix up.

If it works great, you can get your money back. $20 is fair. See private message.

In a related matter, I'm looking for a turntable that can play 78 RPMs.

Doing some archiving for work.

I have it on my Zune as well, but I hate headphones, love the smell of old records and my docking station is in the other room. Yes, I could play it out the computer speakers, but where's the fun?

I hear lots of people complaining that I-Tunes is really restrictive about how you can use your tracks
Anyone care to comment?

Oh yeah
do you have the game "Hexic" on your zune?
they might as well call it "CRACK-xic"
I play it constantly when I am robo-dialing and getting hung up on/leaving voicemail messages at work
Amazing how fast a shift goes by when you are spinning little hex shaped Tetris pieces

I would die without my Zune
My biggest dissapointment is that the way you select videos has too many steps
With music, you just pull up an album and can hit "back" or "forward" to get to the next track
With video, you have to go to the menu, select the next video and then play it
This makes for a less than seamless operation and over complicates the situation, making the zune too much of a hassle to operate videos on stage
Too bad because it would be a lot better than using my computer for vids

1. Can't transfer tracks into iTunes from an iPod.
2. DRM-controlled tracks can expire rendering them moot in iTunes and on your iPod

I prefer my little LG UP3#. It's only 4 gigs. It doesn't have video. BUT it is the size of a USB stick with a retractable USB interface, OLED display, 10+ hours of playback per charge, charges on my PC, and can be used like a flash drive to transfer files PC-to-PC.

I loaded 230 tracks so I have plenty of room for recent downloads. I play it on "Random" and "Repeat All", and it plays while I'm working so I don't have to touch it for hours on end.

i guess nothing has ever even gotten close to actual cds and such for me. a lot of people like digital music, but i just find it less substantive and less fulfilling. i guess i see it as a subpar medium, but that's just me. consequently, releases that were only digitally-released are often the only releases i don't own by a band.
i think it's great that it can get people listening to music that they may have never taken the time to pick up, but it's just not for me.
note: i do actually have an mp3 player, but if i use it more than once or twice a year i'd be surprised - i know i haven't used it yet this year at all actually.

I ripped all of my CDs on my hard drive and still will buy one every once in a while
The last one was at the Melt Banana show
I usually don't care much for statistics but I like that the Zune program shows me all of my listening habits
They give bronze (200) silver (1000) and gold (have not gotten a gold yet) badges for listening to certain artists
I have tons of bronze badges and a silver for Zappa and Buckethead
So far, after owning it for about 1 1/2 years, I have 26,000 total plays, 378 artists, 1,140 albums and 12,107 songs (50 Buckethead and 117 Zappa albums)
They even give you a nifty little box that I put on my MySpace profile that tells people what you are listening to and your badges etc....
You can see it on either of my MYspace profiles
I'm sure it is tracking all of my listening habits but I'm not sure how much marketing they can do to a guy who listens to such dork obsessed obscure music

My only gripe is that the auto complete that fills in track listings and adds art isn't always accurate due to multiple releases of certain albums
You have to correct it a lot and, god forbid, you dump a bunch of downloads into it because it gets a lot of them wrong

Ether told me that having a player would change the way I listen to stuff and he was right
It is nice not to have to carry around a phonebook sized CD folder

Scotch tape coupons, so it's cheaper to fix your glasses.

/snickering

My Hyundai has shitty speakers, so I've actually considered installing a digital media deck with a USB plug in place of the CD player. Playing decent quality .mp3's (92kbps or higher) through those speakers won't hurt as much as if I had upgraded the speakers to something with reference quality. I definitely avoid listening to .mp3's through my studio monitors and headphones.

I just use one of them $20 adaptors that plugs into the cig. lighter. It broadcasts to the 88.1/2/3 frequencies on your car radio
Only because the belt broke on my ancient tape deck

I've thought about those, but they have 2 major flaws... 1. I hate the sound of most radio broadcasts (compressed frequency modulation) and most units sound like that... 2. They're prone to interference: ham radio, tweeked CB radio and other such unlicensed broadcasting, road noise, and actual FM radio broadcasts.

They're a great option for most people, but I get irked by the low-grade digitization of Ramones' Mania when it's played through my CD player. I'd have serious qualms with the over-the-air adaptors when it comes to previewing an uncompressed version of a song I've been working on and I can't hear the subtle background stuff because of FM's limitations.

Post Re: Looking for a record player
my wife bought one of those adaptors but she couldn't get it to work in her car. it works in mine but it sucks the mps player dry pretty quickly (i'm assuming it has something to do with the volume since i had to crank it to hear anything). under typical use, the battery on that thing lasts like 16hrs. nowhere close to it with the adaptor.
i guess my main problem with compressed music is simply the fact that it's compressed to begin. some people say they can't hear any difference but when i hear an mp3 of a song, to me it sounds like absolute crap compared to the cd.
i understand the convenience of the players and all and i guess i go the "to each his/her own" route like i do with religion - not my thing but if it makes someone else happy and they aren't trying to force it on me, why should i care?
that said, back to the adaptor. there are some of them that aren't so bad (at least when i tried the one my wife bought, it wasn't half bad - reduced quality compared to even an mp3 though in my opinion), but any setup is only as good as its connections so if every bump you hit is shifting the connection, it's going to be crap. not mention anything that's being used essentially as a transmitter is only as good as it's signal - i.e. the closer to can keep it the stereo in a fixed position, the better.
and that said as well, the subtle background stuff is what suffers in any kind of compressed format. plus, even with lossless stuff, the more you put it through, the worse off it's going to be once it actually exits the speakers.

i have an old tape deck sitting around up in a closet if you want it. one of the buttons is broken (FF if i recall). what kind of car do you drive? maybe it would fit?
worked last i used it - of course that was 10 years ago.

1995 Chevy Lumina van + a case of tinnitus = don't give a shit

Just about every adaptor I have seen has a USB port on it to power the unit (you still need the 1/8 inch adaptor)
At least, my cheap ass one does

It only plays the same rhetoric over and over and you are not allowed to switch sides or change the record even if it is old and worn out (like their ideals)

But I'm sure he appreciates you joining the fight to keep the American worker in their place
Of course, you aint getting anything out of it but the satisfaction of serving your masters

Actually, Fisher was sold to Sanyo in the mid 1970s when this unit was most likely made.
And the Japanese have some strong electronics industry trade unions from what I understand, and everybody knows how reliable and well-made Japanese electronics are, and they're also inexpensive.
