Post Busking on Nicollet Mall
Here is video fo my first attempt at busking on Nicollet Mall on Sunday
I had to cut it short because of the rain but it was fun nonetheless
Hopefully, it will be nice next weekend and I can do it again

Thanks
The idea came from wondering how I was going to play in Japan and still be able to take my equipment on the train
The entire thing breaks down into a rolling 6 space rack case (with a power distro unit built in)

It is different from all the hippies playing hand drums and I hope it creates a buzz
Lots of kids have come up and wanted to rap
I might be able to add a real snare because the setup was more compact than I thought

here's what it looked like when I first built it

I have realised that reducing the size/weight of my setup is going to make it easier for me to play
I pretty much quit playing live because I killed myself all day just to play a gig for 3 people at Big V's

I've always secretly wanted to pull this maneuver.
I made sure my practice amp worked on batteries.
I shopped around for solar collector packs for ages.
power VS portability is the major concern ultimately.
of course on nicco you've got those outlets they use to power the x-mas lights ;)
You could use that if you could disguise it properly I suppose ^_^

don't bother
I quit doing it when I almost got a $175 ticket for not having a "street entertainer permit"
Evidently, you are welcome to sit out and play a hand drum all day but if you use the city's electricity then you have to pay $130 a month for the permit
The enforcement is about as predictable as porn laws
I talked to a guy who got the ticket for using a battery powered guitar amp and then walked down the street to talk to kids who were dancing to a jambox

Plus, i didn't really make all that much money

Hey Rockula, just delurking to tell you I loved the video. It shows part of what's great about the Twin Cities, and the fact that they tried to bust you shows what sucks.

We're supposed to have one of the most lively arts scenes in the country, but it's still cliquish and controlled for anyone wanting to walk their own path. I admire what you did, and have daydreamed about having the balls to do it myself.

I think that in this case, I suspect it was my location
I was right at the corner where WCCO and Orchestra Hall are and i think the restraunt owner across the street called the cops

I used to let that keep me down until I just got off my ass and put together my own show
I used to sulk and get my feelings hurt when I saw a show I belonged on and yet, no one asked me to play
After all, how can they not invite me to play on their lineup when I am so obviously superior?
Obviously, the answer is that no one is going to give you a shot so you should get out and create your own opportunities

I suspect that my newest event will help change my attitude and give me newfound energy to go out and work instead of asking people to hand things to me
Maybe you can come?

Why did he get the ticket for using their power if it was battery-powered? What am I missing here?

Wouldn't you have interest in playing hand drums or using mallets or a small kit or something? I would think you could still showcase your considerable skills using traditional instrumentation...

The city enforces laws like this at their convenience just like porn laws
The guy who got a ticket for a battery powered amp sounded like the type to give an officer some lip
I just decided it wasn't worth the effort to try to out-guess these people
I did it as an experiment to see if I could pull it off and to adjust the idea for traveling in situations where I can't use a van/car
