Andy Selway - 2008-03-06 [return to interviews]
Interview by Melissa Pierce

Andy Selway started drumming when he was three. Born and raised in the UK, he was a member of many punk and metal bands in his formative years, gaining him experience and landing him where he is today. In 1996 Andy became the drummer for PIG [fronted by Raymond Watts], who opened for KMFDM on their 1997 tour. After that tour, and continuing on with some of the same musicians involved, he joined Schwein which consisted of members of PIG, Buck-Tick & KMFDM. More touring and music-making ensued which led him to the States in 2002 and into the arms of KMFDM as their permanent drummer. I first met him at an autograph signing at the now defunct Let it Be Records in Minneapolis, Minnesota that year. Six years later and many more tours under his belt, Andy was gracious enough to grant me this short interview. I made it quick because I know he's busy! He's not only the drummer for KMFDM but for The Dwarves AND he's working with the Genitorturers this year. Make sure to read his replies with an English accent for the full effect!

Interview by Melissa Pierce

DTC: I know you play the drums, are there any other instruments you play? At what age did you start playing drums and what inspired you to start?

Andy Selway: I had my first drum kit at age 3, my dad bought it back to England for me when he was working in the States, I used to beat the crap outta that but stuck with it long enough for my dad to start to teach me (he plays too) and then give me his full size kit. From then on lots of practicing along to albums (Sabbath, Maiden, Ozzy, The Who, Elvis, anything really)! Started getting out and playing in bands around the age of 14. I also play a bit of bass and guitar, do a bit of programming too...

DTC: Are you working on any other music projects besides KMFDM right now?

Andy Selway: KMFDM is always the main priority, but I'm also drumming for the GENITORTURERS this year and have been playing with THE DWARVES whenever time allows. Myself, Jules and Steve also have a band called OVER THE EIGHT which we are working on at a sluggish pace as we all have a lot of stuff to do!! I'm also starting to write some stuff on me own to see what happens!!

DTC: What is the most rewarding part of making music? Are you doing it for yourself, or for the fans? [Or is it a conglomerate of both?]

Andy Selway: You kind of do it cos you just do!!! It'ss there in your head and it has to come out in one way or another, I suppose primarily you do it for yourself as you have to be happy with what you have done, then it's a bonus obviously if the fans like it too!! But you can never please all the people all the time!!

DTC: Favorite city to play?

Andy Selway: Wow, ummm, tooooo many to name, I suppose Moscow always is a fun show, I also like New Orleans...

DTC: Who is your favorite artist and why?

Andy Selway: Impossible to answer!!! I take some influence from almost everything I hear, I did listen to a hell of a lot of Black Sabbath when growing up though (and still do!!) Just pure heaviness!!!

DTC: Do you have any crazy tour stories from the road?

Andy Selway: YES!!!But i cant tell you or i'd have to kill you!!!

DTC: AWWWWWW. Any future plans to work with PIG?

Andy Selway: nope.... nothing on the horizon there..
